Vice Chair for Education, Family Medicine & Community Health

The University Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) and the Department of Family Medicine & Community Health are seeking a distinguished and visionary leader with a record of accomplishment in education to serve as the Vice Chair for Education. The Vice Chair serves as a leader in advancing the education mission of the Department, with particular focus on resident and medical student education, and enhancing the pipeline of family medicine physicians for the state of Texas and beyond. This leadership role is crucial within the Department of Family Medicine & Community Health, which has a long-standing history of educating future health professionals while advancing research and clinical care. The position will come with the recommendation of an endowment to help support education needs in the department.

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for setting and guiding the education agenda for the Department, leading various education initiatives, and mentoring faculty and resident physicians. The Vice Chair for Education will have academic credentials for appointment as Associate Professor or Full Professor and will report to the Department Chair, Kendall M. Campbell, MD FAAFP (https://www.utmb.edu/fammed/about-us/biographies/kendall-m-campbell). The Vice Chair will serve as part of the departmental leadership team along with the Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs and Vice Chair for Research.

 

Position Summary

The new Vice Chair for Education will provide leadership across four educational domains of the department: development of educational pipeline/pathway programming for pre-college Galvestonians, family medicine focused Undergraduate Medical Education, Graduate Medical Education and Continuing Education for faculty. Continuing education will include overseeing departmental grand rounds and the departmental appointment, promotion and tenure committee. The successful candidate will be responsible for setting the education agenda for the department and will lead, mentor and assist family medicine faculty, resident physicians and medical students in developing educational projects and engaging in educational scholarship. The candidate will work closely with the director of the Medical Student Education Program and the Residency program director to ensure excellence in education and compliance with all accreditation guidelines. These two positions will report to the Vice Chair for Education position.

 

The Vice Chair for Education will collaborate with leaders within, and external to, the Department of Family Medicine & Community Health to drive faculty curiosity and create an educational culture that is strategic and innovative. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to build collaborative educational relationships with a diverse group of academic, health system, and community partners.

 

Key Responsibilities of the Vice Chair for Education

 

  • Provide overall leadership, direction, and oversight for the educational mission of the department
  • Ensure communication across the continuum of learning between medical students and resident physicians
  • Develop, implement, and continuously evaluate the educational program to ensure high-quality medical student and resident physician education and training.
  • Provide oversight of all Faculty Development activities including Grand Rounds and continuing education.
  • Provide oversight of the departmental APT committee
  • Supervise and support faculty development to ensure effective teaching, supervision, and professional growth of faculty, medical students and resident physicians.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with all LCME, ACGME and ABFM accreditation standards and guidelines, including preparation for site visits and maintaining program accreditation.
  • Promote a positive learning environment that fosters professionalism, and departmental well-being.
  • Collaborate with clinical and administrative leadership to secure appropriate training sites, resources, and support for education programs.
  • Manage an educational budget and resource allocation in partnership with the department chair
  • Serve as a role model in clinical excellence, teaching, scholarship, and leadership.
  • Work with the chair to develop educational pipeline/pathway programming for precollege youth of Galveston Island
  • Collaborate with UTMB and community partners on education focused initiatives.
  • Maintain a scholarly presence in education with evidence of peer–reviewed scholarship that engages departmental faculty, resident physicians and medical students.

 

Skills and Relevant Experience

  •        Significant academic and administrative experience in a university health science center or comparable organization, preferably at the rank of        professor or associate professor.

  •        Strong track record of educational productivity, including foundation or educational grants preferred.

  •        Documentable accomplishment in administrative roles in a complex academic health system environment.

  •        Skill developing and administering education budgets

  •        Commitment to mentoring and dedication to developing talent within the department.

     

Qualifications

  • MD, DO, MD/PhD degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution.
  • Board certified in Family Medicine (if an MD/DO).
  • U.S. Citizenship or Employment Authorization to work in the U.S.
  • History of educational leadership in an academic health center, with former roles such as program director, fellowship director or leader in medical student education

Success Measures

During the first 12-18 months, the Vice Chair for Education will be expected to:

·         Build and maintain both professional and personal credibility and trusting relationships with the leadership and faculty within the Department of  Family Medicine, and all colleagues and leaders throughout UTMB.

·         Evaluate and cultivate the educational interests of the faculty.

·         Take the appropriate steps to gain a solid understanding of UTMB’s history, existing organizational and departmental culture and structure. As  part of this effort, assess the current educational activities and identify the education needs of the medical student education program,  residency program and department.

·         Develop and implement an education agenda, defining departmental educational goals

·         Working with the Vice Chair for Research, develop a plan to increase educational scholarship and publication output of the faculty to increase  national reputation.

Salary: Commensurate with experience
