Associate Professor or Full Professor-Tenure Track

University of Texas Medical Branch – Galveston, Texas

University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB Health) – Galveston, Texas

UTMB Health is a $2.2 billion health science center comprised of five hospitals, an extensive network of outpatient clinics, and Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Health Professions, Public and Population Health, as well as a Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, three institutes and over 10 exceptional research centers.  UTMB ranks as a five-star hospital by Vizient, for superior performance in providing high quality care.  UTMB has a long and remarkable history of advancing health sciences education, research, and patient care. It was the first academic health center in Texas and is home to the state’s first schools of medicine, nursing, and allied health sciences. UTMB is also home to the Galveston National Laboratory, one of only two laboratories conducting research on a university campus at the BSL-4 level in the U.S. Overall research funding has increased 20% over the past five years to $132 million and UTMB ranks 54th nationally in NIH funding among medical schools.

The UTMB Department of Family Medicine was founded as an independent department in 1971. It boasts a medical education program, family medicine residency, clinical services and research program. The research program currently consists of faculty, grant and research support that cover areas of primary care research, with a special emphasis on health equity and social determinants of health. Faculty in the department have had varying degrees of funding support through HRSA, the NIH, the Texas Academy of Family Physicians, and various foundations. Peer reviewed manuscripts published in the department have almost doubled in the last two years along with an increase in the number of submitted proposals. Opportunities for research and scholarship are plentiful at UTMB Family Medicine through our three clinics, one located on the UTMB Galveston campus, one on the western end of Galveston Island, and one in Dickinson, Texas, in addition to our partnership with UTMB’s community based clinics, health system and at the previously mentioned school of public and population health.

Opportunities for research collaboration are broad with the five departments of the school of public and population health which include Biostatistics and Data Science, Bioethics and Health Humanities, Epidemiology, Population Health and Health Disparities, and Global Health and Emerging Diseases. Across these departments, the focus is on the primary prevention of disease and disability through the promotion of healthy behaviors and environments, while also addressing disparities in these outcomes. Secondary prevention, or limitation of disease progression, is also emphasized through effective screening and early intervention, and promotion of tertiary prevention, or prevention of disease sequelae, through effective treatment and rehabilitation to restore health and function. Additional research opportunities exist through the department’s inpatient service at the Jennie Sealy Hospital. In addition to our three clinics, clinical services are rendered, and potential research opportunities exist at the Gulf Health Care Center nursing home and the Galveston County Health District's Coastal Health & Wellness. Research partnerships are also available with faculty at UTMB who are doing research with the local community, with community health workers and with faith based organizations.
