REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in basic science or equivalent and 2 years of related experience or master's degree in basic science or related field and no experience required.

Preferred Education & Experience

·       More than two years of experience maintaining mammalian cell cultures is highly preferred.

·       More than two years of experience performing plaque assays, virus neutralization assays, and ELISAs is highly preferred.

·       More than two years of experience working with viruses in BSL-3 or BSL-4 is preferred.

·       The ideal candidate would have a DOJ clearance and more than two years of BSL-3 or BSL-4 experience working with cell cultures, viruses, and laboratory animals.

·       Proficient in molecular biology techniques (PCR, cloning, serological assays, flow cytometry).

Job Description:

Conducts variety of routine and non-routine research assignments and experiments in a high containment facility including Biosafety Levels 3 or 4.

Job Duties:

·       Performs, coordinates, and conducts standard research experiments following general technical instructions.

·       Performs functions of research projects utilizing bio-hazardous substances.

·       Performs technical services such as tissue sampling, blood draws, anesthesia, and injections.

·       Makes modifications to research techniques as required by investigator.

·       Follows specific protocols.

·       Conducts quality control measures for assigned project operations.

·       Contributes to scientific analysis and projects.

·       Orders and maintains lab inventory of supplies, animals, and equipment.

·       Maintains records of all tests performed and data collected, compiles, and tabulates data, provides analysis of results, and engages in

  •   Maintains knowledge of biohazard operations.

Job Marketing Statement

A Research Associate Position is available immediately to support studies evaluating vaccines and treatments against BSL-4 viruses (e.g., Ebola, Marburg, Lassa, Nipah) and to support work characterizing the pathogenesis of these agents in animal models. The applicant must meet all State and Federal requirements necessary for working with Select Agents. UTMB has several highly interactive research centers, biomedical institutes, and a national biocontainment laboratory with excellent infrastructure to conduct research at BSL2, -3 and -4 on diverse animal models of infectious diseases. The Department, with 31 full-time faculty members, is ranked among the top of its peer departments in NIH funding.

·       Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.

·       Performs related duties as required.

Working Environment/Equipment

  • Standard laboratory and office equipment. 
  • High containment animal facility environment. Pregnancy may become a safety factor in some laboratory animal science duties. Potential exposure to radiation and biohazards.
  • Requires completion of appropriate vaccinations.
