Biosafety Specialist - Research, Regulations and Compliance
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in biology, Microbiology, or life sciences, or related field, or equivalent, and one year of experience.
***Must pass the UTMB Department of Justice Level 3 clearance.
Job Description:
Provides professional knowledge and expertise in the operation and support of Biosafety programs in compliance with regulatory agencies, national guidelines, and institutional policies.
Job Duties:
- Provides laboratory biosafety and technical training.
- Maintains training records and reports.
- Ships category A and category B infectious materials.
- Conducts laboratory safety audits.
- Supports the containment laboratories procedures and processes.
- Responds to biosafety emergencies and complaints.
- Reviews Notification of Use (NOU’s) in preparation for submission to the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).
- Interacts with the research community to ensure compliance with regulations and policies.
- Interacts with other Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) program areas in support of biosafety.
- Requires moderate supervision to achieve desired outcome.
- Establishes appropriate work procedures to ensure compliance with regulations and UTMB policies.
- Supports committees by correctly interpreting University policies and other regulatory agency policies and procedures.
- Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.

Reports to: Takes directions from the EHS Consultant and reports directly to the Biosafety Program Director.
Salary Range:
Commensurate with experience.
