Director, Compensation (Primarily Remote Work)
Job Summary: Provides strategic leadership and direction in the design, application and administration of policies and practices in support of the UTMB compensation programs. Significant focus is placed on design development, migration of new programs and innovation to support recruitment and retention efforts through the development and continuous improvement of a contemporary compensation approach.
Scope: Institution wide development, administration and delivery of compensation programs.
Essential Job Functions:
- Provides broad strategic and operational direction for practices and procedures of the UTMB compensation function.
- Oversees UTMB’s compensation programs for the majority of the employee population. Reviews current designs and implements enhancements to compensation programs for executive leadership approval.
- Aligns the compensation philosophy of UTMB with the institution’s strategies and goals and integration with performance management programs.
- Develops UTMB executive compensation, salary administration and merit/variable pay recommendations
- Manages the design, development and implementation of general communication and specific tools that assist employees and managers with compensation related understanding and decision making, as appropriate.
- Directs, mentors and develops a team of professionals in institutional compensation consultation for all levels of employees.
- Manages executive and administrative/professional incentive compensation programs and monitors market trends to ensure competitiveness.
- Reviews, analyzes and makes recommendations regarding the annual process to generate proposed salary structure and merit pay adjustments for administrative/professional and classified employees. Oversees market adjustment movements in base pay and other compensation programs that allow UTMB to remain competitive in the labor market.
- Designs and develops career ladders and career paths to support employee development needs and long-term staffing issues that complement the future compensation philosophy, methodology and administration.
- Partners closely with other HR leaders and staff and other internal stakeholders to effectively implement compensation programs and initiatives.
- Manages the third-party vendor contracts, budgets and relationships in support of compensation for all UTMB employees.
- Assists HR leadership in responding to Legislative Budget Requests involving compensation programs at UTMB and directs responses to compensation requests submitted through the Texas Open Records Act.
- Identifies and implements technology solutions and integration initiatives to improve departmental functions and customer service excellence.
- Consults with UTMB executive leadership on matters relative to compensation programs.
- Works directly with Legal, Payroll, Finance and Audit Services to ensure accuracy and compliance in compensation issues.
- Provides input on strategic HR issues as a member of the HR Leadership Team.
- Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
- Performs related duties as required.

- Progressive Human Resource management competencies and leadership skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of creation and implementation of market-based pay structures
- Advanced analytic, statistics and problem-solving skills
- Strong project management and organizational skills to support operational efficiency
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across all levels of the institution with a demonstrated history of making complex presentations to executive level leadership and managing the change management aspects of transitioning to a new compensation structures and programs.
- Strong critical thinking skills, employing logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative approaches, solutions, conclusions or approaches to compensation related challenges
- Specific knowledge in the development of compensation philosophies and salary structures using market-based pay methodologies
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation creation and delivery.
Work Location - The person in this role will primarily work remotely, however must reside in Texas in order to be readily available to attend meetings and other work-related in-person activities as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field
- 10 years of progressive, professional HR leadership or consulting experience, including 5 years of direct Compensation management experience.
- CCP or other relevant compensation certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s in Human Resources, Business Administration or related field
- 15 years of progressive, professional HR leadership or consulting experience, including 5 years of direct compensation management experience.
- SHRM or HRCI certification.
- Compensation management experience in an academic medical center, healthcare system or higher education
