Minimum Qualifications:

PhD, MD, or equivalent terminal degree within relevant scientific field (e.g., epidemiology, public health, international development) with a minimum of 5-10 years of experience in global initiatives and leadership.  Direct experience working with global initiative funding.  

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • PhD in public health, biomedicine, or global health policy with a minimum of 8 years of experience.
  • Additional years of experience and/or type/area of work experience are preferred for job (e.g., job duties related to public and global initiatives).

Job Summary:

The Director of Global Initiatives will be responsible for developing and implementing initiatives that build global partnerships, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and drive impactful solutions. The incumbent will lead a team to work cross-functionally with UTMB academic schools, departments, the clinical enterprise, and external constituents. The Director's responsibilities include enhancing the institution's reputation and global recognition. Key duties include expanding funding opportunities, participating in recruiting top talent, and fostering increased interdisciplinary collaboration and resource-sharing. Additionally, the Director will be pivotal in training future global initiative leaders and driving innovation to address emerging global initiatives. The Global Initiatives Director must balance leadership, collaboration, and innovation to drive a sustainable global initiatives infrastructure. The incumbent will be accountable for leading global initiatives, supporting faculty and researchers in expanding global initiatives, and representing the institution in global initiative conferences and forums.

Job Duties:

  • Develop and execute a long-term vision and strategic plan while ensuring alignment with the institution's broader goals. 
  • Demonstrated scientific leadership ability.
  • Active or recently active in research and education with academic or equivalent experience.
  • Develop and lead the implementation of strategic and operational objectives to advance global initiatives efficiently and effectively. Responsible for ensuring the delivery and execution of key programs and initiatives.  
  • Accountable as a leadership team member for setting and advancing global initiatives, driving program innovation and impact, fostering a high-performance culture, ensuring seamless intradepartmental communication and collaboration, and effectively managing the budget and operations with scope of responsibility.
  • Represent global priorities in discussions with stakeholders and business partners to successfully influence and advance organizational objectives and policy initiatives.
  • Identify, develop, and manage a network of internal and external partnerships to establish project value propositions. Build a strong reputation for the global community by publishing, actively participating, and presenting at conferences.
  • Be a strong leader and use expertise to drive strong performance of the global initiatives group by recruiting, retaining, and developing a high-quality staff. Effectively drive a high-performance culture through direct and indirect reports.
  • Ability to track progress against project plans, generate status updates, and communicate progress and issues to management.
  • Manage, coach, and mentor direct reports, effectively coordinating resources to meet program goals.
  • Maintain a continuing knowledge of scientific advances within the industry and academic community.
  • Provide strong leadership in working with diverse UTMB leaders. 
  • Develops relationships with external organizations.  
  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Provost or President.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 

  • Direct experience in leading the development and implementation of global initiative programs. 
  • Creative problem solver to address complex global initiative challenges effectively with a track record of innovation.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership in team building, team management, and ability to thrive in a cultural change environment.
  • Proven track record in establishing strategic and operational priorities to lead successful global initiatives, at the project and line management level.
  • Strong leadership abilities for project teams and management responsibilities, and an ability to bring together diverse skill sets to form a cohesive team.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • A passion for research and commitment to professionalism.  

Salary Range:
Commensurate with experience 

Working Environment/Equipment:
Standard office equipment.  The Director will primarily be housed at the Galveston main campus.  May require travel nationally and internationally.
