JOB SUMMARY
The Health Information Management (HIM) Manager provides advanced professional skills in the management of the HIM team within a self-directed/empowered environment. Working independently and as part of the HIM Leadership team to foster, collaborate, and utilize HIM knowledge and skill set to develop and sustain health information systems and processes throughout the health system.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Minimum Qualifications:
• Associate Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Health Information Management.
• 2 years of previous HIM management experience or in related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Additional education or degree(s) preferred for job.
• Additional years of experience and/or type/area of work experience preferred for job.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS OR CERTIFICATIONS
Required:
• Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Directs, plans, schedules, and participates in day-to-day activities within HIM department of the regional campus which includes but is not limited to records management, records processing, release of information, birth registry and master patient index.
• Assists with the management of HIM staff, including hiring, coaching, disciplining, and counseling staff, while monitoring the quality of work performance.
• Assists with the communication and customer service efforts with HIM staff, facility and clinical departments, leadership, and medical staff.
• Assists the management team with standardizing and coordinating health information management practices to promote internal reliability, productivity and favorable performance when compared to others.
• Consults and advises across the regional campus regarding the development, maintenance, and use of standard, coordinated clinical information management and practices.
• Fosters the privacy, security and efficiency of information storage and retrieval through procedure, architecture, and technology.
• Assists management team in developing departmental policies, practices, and procedures consistent with professional standards, legal regulatory requirements and institutional goals related to health information management.
• Works collaboratively and serves as a resource with Medical Staff and Hospital Leadership to comply with standards and guidelines enforced through the hospital’s Medical Staff Bylaws/Rules and Regulations and assists with the facilitation and execution of physician notification processes regarding medical record documentation.
• Develop and maintain good rapport with interdisciplinary team members to help ensure that medical records are properly maintained, and problem areas identified and corrected in a timely manner.
• Completes monthly department budget reconciliation and assists director with annual budget planning.
• Assists with ensuring all applicable EHR and compatible systems are working according to established workflow policies and guidelines.
JOB DESCRIPTION
• Identifies appropriate internal controls for department; provides mechanisms to monitor and enforce compliance and efficiencies.
• Provides HIM support on institutional efforts, such as disaster planning, safety & environment of care teams, clinical policies and procedures committee, business continuity planning, and benchmark reporting.
Marginal or Periodic Functions:
• Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
• Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
• Demonstrates knowledge in information privacy laws including 45 CFR, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and state medical records law.
• Demonstrates a clear working knowledge of general hospital operations.
• Knowledge of accreditation standards to ensure adherence to all standards set forth by state and accrediting agencies of TJC and CMS.
• Demonstrates an understanding of treatment costs and financial support as they relate to quality and efficiency.
• Working knowledge of medical terminology, abbreviation, and spelling.
• Ability to maintain exceptional levels of confidentiality.
• Demonstrates proficiency with general computer skills including data entry, word processing, email, and records management.
• Demonstrates critical thinking skills.
• Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and complete complex tasks.
• Ability to maintain quality and safety standards.
