Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in basic science or equivalent; no experience required.
Job Summary:
Research Associate I performs varying standardized laboratory assignments and experiments.
MAJOR DUTIES / CRITICAL TASKS:
Under direct supervision, performs standard research assignments involving a series of
related operations.
Sets up and conducts standard research experiments following detailed technical
instructions.
Prepares biological assays and conducts basic quantitative and qualitative analysis.
Maintains records of all tests performed and data collected.
Assists in the compilation and tabulation of data and provides preliminary analysis.
Assembles, calibrates, operates and makes minor modifications to a variety of laboratory
equipment as defined by appropriate guidelines.
Adheres to internal controls established for department.
Performs related duties as required.

Department Marketing Statement:
We are seeking an enthusiastic new team member interested in pursuing biomedical research. Our laboratory studies proteins involved in brain function using structural biology, biochemical and biophysical techniques, in particular proteins involved in synapse formation, maintenance and plasticity. The position is well suited to a recent, highly motivated college graduate (biochemistry, biophysics, chemistry) with previous laboratory experience during their studies.
Specific Job Related Duties:
Experimental duties include but are not limited to:
· Molecular biology techniques: sub-cloning, isolating and purifying DNA, PCR, mutagenesis, transforming bacterial cells, growing bacterial cultures and insect cell cultures, expressing recombinant proteins, DNA and protein gel electrophoresis;
· Biochemical techniques: purifying proteins using a variety of chromatographic methods using the Akta FPLC, binding assays, immuno-blotting;
· Biophysical techniques: fluorescence polarization, isothermal titration calorimetry
· Macromolecular crystallization
Non-experimental duties include but are not limited to:
· Interacting with and assisting (new) laboratory members;
· Working as part of a team to maintain our laboratory through ordering of lab supplies, maintenance of equipment and protocols.
Requirements: The successful candidate will have an interest in biomedical research, a willingness to learn new techniques and develop new protocols. The successful applicant will also function well in a friendly, very dedicated, and highly motivated environment. The position requires being comfortable working independently, excellent communication skills and the willingness to work well together with our lab members who have very diverse skill levels, career paths and cultural backgrounds.
