Job Description:

Performs a variety of routine and non-routine research assignments and experiments and assists with lab maintenance responsibilities. In addition, the applicant will maintain records of available research animals and oversee animal colonies. It would also be expected that the applicant will be eventually able to individually execute animal studies. The applicant will work initially under supervision of senior experts, and he/she is expected to gain independency after proper training is complete.  This would include basic study design and organization, monitoring, and independent execution of basic in-vivo techniques.  The applicant will be responsible for collecting data and summarize results for publication and/or presentation purposes.

Job Duties:

  • Under general supervision, performs routine and non-routine research assignments and experiments of moderate complexity in experimental animal infections.
  • Plans, coordinates, provides setup and conducts standard research experiments following general technical instructions.
  • Prepares virus and antibody assays and conducts quantitative and qualitative analysis.
  • Makes modifications to research procedures as determined by Principal Investigator with a focus on animal techniques.
  • Maintains records of all tests performed and data collected and provides preliminary analysis of results.
  • Assists in the compilation and tabulation of data and analysis of final data.
  • Ensures the accurate assembly, calibration, operation and modification of a variety of laboratory equipment as defined by appropriate guidelines.
  • Maintains lab for animal and environmental safety compliance.
  • Complete ASL3, ABSL2 and ABSL3 training.
  • Maintains lab inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Performs literature searches as outlined by the Principal Investigator.
  • May provide guidance to junior research staff.
  • Adheres to internal controls established for department.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Department Marketing Statement: The successful applicant will be responsible for conducting basic laboratory activities such as isolating proteins and nucleic acids from tissue, perform immunohistochemistry studies, using confocal microscopy, purifying cDNA plasmids, running gel electrophoresis, performing basic sub-cloning, and basic virological assays such as propagation and titration. In addition, the applicant will maintain records of available research animals and oversee animal colonies.  It would also be expected that the applicant will be eventually able to execute basic animal study techniques.  The applicant will work initially under supervision of senior experts, and he/she is expected to gain independency after proper training is complete. The applicant will be responsible for collecting data and summarize results for publication and/or presentation purposes.
