MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s Degree in Finance or Accounting or equivalent in related field and at least 7 years of relevant work experience.


PREFERRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, healthcare administration, or a related field.
  • Progressively responsible financial management experience, including leadership of financial operations for a large academic department or multiple departments within a complex academic medical center.
  • Working knowledge of clinical operations, including physician practice operations, faculty productivity and compensation, revenue cycle, and the relationship between clinical activity, revenue, and expenses.
  • Experience managing budgets and financial planning across the clinical, education, and research missions, including multiple funding sources, sponsored research, and foundation, philanthropic, and restricted accounts.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and developing staff, establishing clear responsibilities and performance expectations, and building an effective finance team.
  • Demonstrated success leading process improvement, standardizing financial practices, and developing reporting that supports accountability and leadership decision-making.

 

JOB SUMMARY:

Manages and assists the Director in financial and operational analysis activities with a complex functional or broad organizational scope. The senior manager will be able to assist in multiple activities at one time with little supervision.


DEPARTMENT MARKETING STATEMENT:

Seeking a candidate who will lead financial management for UTMB’s Departments of Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, supporting the clinical, education, and research missions within a complex academic medical center. The role offers an opportunity for an experienced finance leader to develop a team, strengthen financial planning and reporting, and improve and standardize processes across both departments. Success requires strong financial management experience, working knowledge of clinical operations, and experience managing diverse funding sources, including foundation accounts.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Advanced knowledge of financial management and accounting principles, internal controls, and the funding structures supporting clinical care, education, and research in an academic medical center.
  • Ability to lead financial operations across multiple departments, balancing department-specific needs with consistent processes, controls, and reporting.
  • Ability to apply working knowledge of clinical operations to financial planning and analysis, evaluate the financial impact of operational decisions, and partner with clinical leaders to support department goals.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to validate complex financial data, identify trends and risks, and translate findings into clear recommendations.
  • Expertise in budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, reconciliation, and financial reporting across multiple funding sources.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and develop staff; delegate effectively; and establish accountability for accurate and timely work.
  • Ability to evaluate workflows, lead process improvement, document procedures, and implement standardized practices.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, including the ability to explain financial information clearly and partner effectively with faculty, department leadership, and central administrative teams.
  • Sound judgment and the ability to prioritize competing demands, resolve complex issues, and manage sensitive information with discretion.
  • Proficiency with financial systems and reporting tools, including the ability to use technology to improve data accuracy, efficiency, and visibility.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
